The USS KANSAS CITY (AOR-3), a Wichita-class replenishment oiler, was commissioned on 6 JUN 1970. USS KANSAS CITY was built at the General Dynamic Shipyard in Quincy, Mass. After commissioning she was homeported in Oakland, CA. Once able, KANSAS CITY was deployed to the Western Pacific and Vietnamese waters three times. Once the war wound down, KANSAS CITY continued with a regular series of "WEST PACs", keeping the fleet fueled. Iraqi occupation of Kuwait called KANSAS CITY to the Indian Ocean to fuel the massing US Naval Armada. USS KANSAS CITY served her country for 24 years, 4 months and 1 day, until decommissioned on 7 OCT 1994. USS KANSAS CITY was laid up at NISMF - Suisun Bay, Benicia, CA in September 1999. Her final disposition is pending.

USS KANSAS CITY (AOR-3)



The name Kansas City was assigned to AOR-3 on 27 April 1967. The General Dynamics Corp. Quincy Div. Quincy Mass. began construction of the replenishment fleet tanker in the summer of 1967 with completion planned for the summer of 1969.

Once commissioned Kansas City will operate as a multipurpose replenishment ship furnishing fuel ammunition and fleet provisions and stores to the far-ranging U.S. force at sea.
