Sit-Rep Fall 1999

This Web Site, the unofficial site of the U.S.S. Newport (LST-1179), gets underway in October 1999.

I begin this because a shipmate of mine died this year at age 40. I had several of my Navy pictures reprinted for his friends and family. The passing of my shipmate and looking through all my photos caused me to do an Internet search on Newport and LSTs. I found an unexpected number of sites dedicated to ships, units and the military.

This site exists because I recall the sacrifice and effort that we all made to enable The Newport to make her commitments. In 1999 as I write this, I've told several of my friends (15-20 years younger than I) of crossing the Atlantic. That we knew we were getting close to the other side when a Russian Tupulov Bear bomber, with a red star on its tail, would fly by.

Soviet Bear Bomber

The Russian Bear and the Red Star ... it seems unimaginable from today ... but today exists the way it does because millions of U.S. Military personnel worked and sacrificed to enable their unit to make its commitments.

I've outlined the history of the Newport as I know it, as a crew member from June 77 to December 1980. I hope that crew from that time will contact me to complete the details of our time. And, I certainly hope to hear from crews of other times to add to the history pages.

Please feel free to email me your recall of Newport history. I would be glad to post any photos you would want to contribute.

I wish you smooth sailing.
