The USS MOUNT HOOD (AE-29), a Kilauea-class ammunition ship, was commissioned on 1 MAY 1971. USS MOUNT HOOD was built by Bethlehem Steel at Sparrows Point, Maryland outside of Baltimore. After commissioning and shake down training she sailed for her homeport of Concord, California. MOUNT HOOD's first "West Pacs" were to support the war effort in Vietnam. She continued deploying after the war, into the Western Pacific, and extending into the Indian Ocean as needed. USS MOUNT HOOD served her country for 28 years, 3 months and 9 days, until decommissioned on 10 AUG 1999. MOUNT HOOD is laid up at the NISMF at Suisan Bay, Benicia, California.

May 1967 by Bethlehem Steel Corp., Sparrows Point, Md.; launched 17 July 1968;
sponsored by Mrs. Robert A. Frosch, wife of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy
for Research and Development; and is scheduled to commission early in 1970.
