DD-393 USS Jarvis

USS Jarvis was built at Puget Sound in Bremerton, Washington and commissioned in October 1937. The ship was first involved in shakedown, and then went through alterations before heading to the Eastern Pacific and the Caribbean for two years. In April 1940, Jarvis was sent to Hawaii due to the tensions with Japan, and she was present when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. USS Jarvis helped in the effort to repel Japanese aircraft during that attack.

After Pearl Harbor, Jarvis was sent to participate in many different operations and duties through 1942, including Wake Island, anti-submarine patrols and convoy escorts to Australia. She was then sent to patrol and escort missions in the South Pacific for the better part of June and July 1942. USS Jarvis went on to join the task force involved in the Guadalcanal and Tulagi, which was the first major offensive in the Pacific War.

USS Jarvis was slightly damaged in late 1942, but was able to head for Australia to undergo repairs. Unfortunately, she was engaged en-route by Japanese ships and land bombers during the Battle of Savo Island. USS Jarvis was hit repeatedly, and sank with her entire crew on board.
